Mike Tyson to Return to Fight for Charity

Tyson vs Wanderlei

It seems that each week since Mike Tyson announced his comeback to the sport of boxing, we get word of new challengers and potential bouts.

This week, Tyson was offered a massive deal for a bare knuckle fight. Additionally, there’s news that he could be facing a former opponent in a charity bout, and no it’s not Evander Holyfield.

Tyson’s comeback has also become a popular prop bet for boxing betting sites as they’re listing odds on just about every rumored opponent. Let’s take a look at the latest rumors, reports and Mike Tyson betting odds to see where we can potentially make some money.

Mike Tyson vs Wanderlei Silva

With Tyson’s return, there have been numerous opportunities for fights spanning across different sports. First, Tyson has already stepped back into a pro wrestling ring as he showed up in two different AEW events. He’s expected to continue this relationship with AEW for the near future.

However, this willingness to step into other sports won’t extend to MMA or bare knuckle fighting. Tyson is focused only on returning to the boxing ring and a charity fight with gloves, not bare knuckles.

Yet, that didn’t stop Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship from allegedly offering a massive contract to Mike Tyson to fight MMA legend Wanderlei “The Axe Murderer” Silva. That also didn’t stop online boxing betting sites from releasing the following odds on this proposed matchup:

  • Mike Tyson (-286)
  • Wanderlei Silva (+180)

Reportedly, Tyson was offered $18 million dollars and Silva was offered $10 million dollars to fight in the BFKC. Both men would also receive a percentage of the PPV revenue.

Silva is 43 years old and still active in MMA as he currently competes with Bellator. However, he’s well past his prime. Silva is a legendary MMA fighter who had tremendous success in Pride and the UFC.

I’m a bit surprised that Tyson has turned down this offer. Perhaps, he can revisit it after his charity boxing fight. Maybe, he just needs to see how well his 53 year old body holds up in an exhibition before stepping into a real battle.

With that said, I would take Mike Tyson in this matchup against Silva. For starters, Silva can only use his hands. That means the rest of his MMA game is null and void.

Tyson has more power, more speed and better striking skills than Silva. Additionally, he’s about the same height, but a good 40 pounds heavier. So, there would have to be an agreed upon catchweight, which might be difficult for Tyson to cut down to at this age.

Mike Tyson vs Shannon Briggs

In addition to a bare knuckle offer, it appears that we might have some legitimate movement in Tyson’s upcoming charity exhibition fight.

Former heavyweight champion Shannon Briggs has stated that he agreed to fight Mike Tyson. Ironically, Briggs is also training to compete in BKFC. The 48 year old recently shed light on the alleged agreement for an exhibition fight with Tyson:

“I just talked to Mike Tyson, it’s going down, me and Mike. We’re going to make it happen, it’s official, you’re going to see it happen, Brownsville versus Brownsville. Me and Tyson are going to lace up the gloves, we’re going to rumble, rumble in the jungle. We’re going to let our fists do the talking. This is for charity, this is an exhibition, I want people to understand. It’s for charity, it will be fun, but this is Mike Tyson we are talking about.”

As you can see in the Instagram video above, Briggs looks equally as impressive physically as Tyson does. He will have the height and reach advantage as Briggs is 6’4” and Tyson is 5’10”. He’ll also have a weight advantage of about 15-20 pounds depending on how far Briggs comes down in weight.

Unfortunately, there are no odds available for this rumored exhibition fight. However, as the story picks up more steam, I expect odds to be released sooner than later.

Other Rumored Matchups for Tyson

As previously reported and discussed, Mike Tyson has been linked to other matchups like Evander Holyfield, Tyson Fury and MMA fighter Tito Ortiz.

The showdown with Fury, even in an exhibition fight, won’t happen. It’s a fantasy and not a reality. Fury is nearly a foot taller, has incredible reach and weight advantages, is 22 years younger, and is the best heavyweight in the sport today. Fury is a -5000 betting favorite for this fantasy bout.

Tyson’s rivalry against Holyfield will live on infamy with the ear biting incident. Although the two legends are friendly these days, both would love another chance at punching each other in the face. Tyson is favored in this potential matchup at -286 odds compared to Holyfield at +180.

Lastly, former MMA champ Tito Ortiz has also called out Tyson to a fight. Sportsbooks have “Iron Mike” listed as high as -550 over Ortiz at +295. Like with the Wanderlei Silva matchup, I don’t see how Ortiz can hang with Tyson in a straight up boxing match.

We’ll continue to monitor the Mike Tyson comeback soap opera and bring you the latest news whenever odds are released on potential matchups.
